A: The student has to decide what they are looking for. Are you looking for stand-up fighting, ground fighting, joint locks and throwing, or sword play?
There are age restrictions that need to be taken into consideration. All classes can be viewed in advance to get a better idea of what is taught and the prospective student can also talk to the instructors or other students with any questions they might have.
A: Choose a class time on our schedule and come 5 or 10 minutes early in loose fitting clothes (no shorts). You will sign a wavier form (parents must sign for children under 18) and try a free class.
Sword students should give us a 15 minute warning so we can be prepared with a borrowed wooden sword.
A: After your first free class, you can pay by cash, check, Visa or Mastercard (credit cards must go through the supply store). There are no contracts to sign. You pay month to month.
A: Class always begins with stretching/warm up (being on time is very important). Different belt levels are then divided up in the class with separate instructors, when needed.
Beginning and newer students are asked to go to beginner classes and will work on class etiquette along with the basics of that art.
No one will spar until they have learned proper control.
A: Once you have decided you want to continue, you can purchase a uniform at our supply store or buy one on your own (some of the arts require specific uniforms).
Each art requires different uniforms and equipment and are listed below:
A: Color belt testing is different for different arts and is usually every three - six months if the student has acquired the knowledge and ability necessary for the next belt.
The higher you go, the longer you train between belts. There are 9 - 10 belt levels from white to black.
Testing fees are different and are posted on the studio walls and must be paid prior to testing. Color belts receive national certification with their new belts and black belts receive new uniforms, embroidered belts, and international certification from Korea.
Testing not only includes what the student has learned for their current belt level but past levels and may include board breaking. Students will be told what is on each test in advance and will be evaluated at pre-testing to make sure they know the required curriculum.
